European cultures-civilizations

There were a few previous articles regarding racial-tribal mix in Europe. Racial mix in Western Europe is mainly Roman, Celtic, Germanic. In Eastern Europe, it is Slavic, Hellenic, Thracian, Illyrian, Ural-Altaic. In Western Europe, we had two main movements of people. In Eastern Europe, there were four movements. These movements had an impact on racial-tribal and culture-civilization mix.

Racial-tribal mix affects culture-civilization mix but they are not the same. Generally, superior civilizations prevail and end up having much greater percentage than the one in racial-tribal mix. Also superior civilizations may spread in other areas where there is no racial ingredient in the mix. Hellenic, incorporated in Roman-H, spread in Western Europe that has no Hellenic ancestry.

In Western Europe, Romans moved into Celtic territory. But there was no large migration of population. They mostly sent troops and often these troops were from other than Rome areas of the Empire. The movement spread Roman culture-civilization in Celtic lands. A more important movement in terms of racial mix was that of Germanic tribes which occurred later. They moved mainly southwestern into Celtic territory that was previously in Western European Empire.

In Eastern Europe, Hellenes (Macedonians) moved eastern and established initially Macedonian Empire and later Hellenistic kingdoms. Slavic tribes moved southern into Greco-Thraco-Illyrian and Byzantine territory. Ural-Altaic tribes moved western, from Siberia to Eastern Europe. Russians moved in the opposite direction, when they annexed Siberia.

We find some common traits in the movements. Romans and Germanic tribes moved into Celtic land. Romans moved western and northwestern while Germanic tribes moved western and southwestern. The direction of Hellenes was eastern and southeastern while that of Russians eastern. They moved into Asia but in different territories. The area Hellenes moved in was below the one Russians did.

In the previous article, we gave an example. We assumed that Roman-H (Greco-Roman) was 55% original Roman-O and 45% Hellenic. Also Byzantine was 60% Hellenic, 20% Slavic and 20% Eastern. These percentages where not the result of scientific research or estimations of historians. Usually, the only numbers historians like are dates. Readers can change the percentages according to their opinions.

All we know is that there was a strong influence of Hellenic culture-civilization on Roman, a significant influence of Eastern on Hellenistic and a notable of Slavic on Byzantine. Since Celtic and Germanic tribes lived in Western Europe, there were elements of Celtic and Germanic cultures-civilizations incorporated in Roman. Also, there were other smaller influences.

In Western Europe, other could be Colonial (from colonies), Arabic, Slavic etc. Let's say that Western European culture-civilization is 50% Roman-H (Greco-Roman), 20% Celtic, 20% Germanic, Other 10%. What if Roman-H (Greco-Roman) was 65% Roman and 35% Greek (Hellenic)? Original Roman-O percentage in Western European becomes 50% X 65% = 32,5% and Hellenic 50% X 35% = 17,5%

In Eastern Europe, other could be Roman, Celtic, Germanic etc. If we add 10% other, the mix becomes 54% Hellenic, 18% Slavic, 18% Eastern, 10% Other. There are no more ingredients to add in the mix, since the rest of Europe has Slavic ancestry with a little Ural-Altaic which is Eastern. Byzantine culture had a large influence on Kievan Russes. But their culture-civilization was definitely much more Slavic.

The first substantial Eastern influence was in the Hellenistic kingdoms. That was before 30 BC which is considered the end of Hellenistic period. After the split of Roman Empire, Western Siberian (Ural-Altaic) tribes migrated in Byzantine Empire and the rest of Eastern Europe, peacefully and not peacefully. Some migrations were in large numbers and others in smaller.

Bulgars, Finns, Hungarians, Tatars, Avars, Khazars, Oghuz Turks, Ottoman Turks, Huns were among the Western Siberian tribes that migrated in Eastern Europe. It was not so much in Byzantine Empire, it was more outside its boundaries. So there was further significant Eastern influence in Eastern European culture-civilization. Eastern includes all influences Eastern of Europe.

As an average, in Byzantine and Kievan Rus territory, the mix could be 45% Hellenic, 25% Slavic, 20% Eastern, 10% Other. In order not to make it to complicated, we intentionally ommitted Thracian and Illyrian inlfuence. It was small but there were some elements incorporated in Hellenic, Hellenistic and Byzantine culture-civilization. So in Western and Eastern Europe, the percentages in culture-civilization mix could be;

Roman 32,5    Celtic 20    Germanic 20    Hellenic 17,5    Other 10

Hellenic 35    Slavic 25    Eastern 20    Thracian 5    Ilyrian 5    Other 10

It is obvious that these two are very different mixes, eventhough they both have some Hellenic. There is no question that the ingredients of the mixes are correct. No one could argue against it. But there could be many different reasonable opinions regarding the percentages. Someone can change the percentages according to his/her opinion.

Only Hellenic "ingredient" is not included in Western European racial-tribal mix. It is in culture-civilization mix though due to the strong influence it had on Roman. In Eastern Europe, part of Eastern in culture-civilization mix is Ural-Altaic which is also in racial mix but small. Another part is the Eastern influence during Hellenistic period which is not in racial-tribal mix or it is very small.

Judging by contemporary achievements, one may conclude that Roman civilization was superior to Hellenistic - Byzantine. Currently Western Europe is more advanced than Eastern. Nevertheless, Byzantine Empire was more advanced than Western Europe, for a large part of its existence. The reason Eastern Europe is less advanced is what followed, Ottoman rule, communist era etc. In the future, Eastern Europe could reach (or surpass?) Western Europe, in terms of advancement.
